Both active-service members and veterans provided first-hand testimony about the implications of the chaotic U.S. withdrawal from Afghanistan, describing in detail the brutality and trauma experienced on the ground. They compelled Congress to help those left behind. This testimony opened what’s expected to be a series of hearings examining the Biden administration’s handling of the withdrawal in Aug. 2021. The majority of witnesses argued that the fall of Kabul was an American failure due to poor planning and inadequate support.
